Witch: a powerful task – and document- switcher for Mac OS X

mac os x task switcher witchI guess you’re all used to do Command-Tab all the time to do task-switching and, if you’re a Windows switcher, you’re still more used to the ALT-Tab keys combination.

Witch, from Peter Maurer, comes in really handy since it allows you not only to switch from one task to another, but to switch from each and every open document under every program running.

An easy way to pass from multiple open documents with the simple touch of a switch.

Witch is Universal Binary and comes for free or a donation via paypal to the author.

Mac OS X Security Update 2006-001

Quite a few updates:

  • apache_mod_php
  • automount
  • Bom
  • Directory Services
  • iChat
  • IPSec
  • LaunchServices
  • LibSystem
  • loginwindow
  • Mail
  • rsync
  • Safari
  • Syndication

In detail, the most critical (to my usage): PHP 4.4.1 fixes several security issues, the FileVault, unsecure in some way at the very first access, and Safari fix against some buffer overflow.

Apple announcements: new Mac mini w/Intel Core and iPod HiFi

As always, great rumors and many fakes.
The truth about today’s Apple announcement is: Mac mini shifts to Intel and iPod HiFi, a three-way speaker box.

The new Mac mini with Intel processors, both Core Duo running @ 1,66 GHz or Core Solo running @ 1,5 GHz.
This is the first time ever for a Intel Core Solo processor, as far as we know.

Featuring Front Row and its remote, up to 120 GB hard drive and an Intel GMA950 GPU, the new Mac mini is the second Intel-based move in less than 60 days: quite a fast shift, even for Steve’s company.

    Good job!

Looking at the box, there’s almost nothing different from the previous model, apart from the back sporting different ports and connectors.

The only ‘dark’ spot is the GMA950-based graphics card and its performance, opposed to ATI and nVidia chipsets, but in the next days plenty of benchmarks will be published about this topic.
The iPod HiFi is a speaker-boombox featuring the universal dock connector and three big speakers with a design that may be so trendy and so 70’s; remote command included.

Want to read more? Here’s a list of places you may like, just a few:

    First Mac OS X Worm?

mac os x wormFirst Mac OS X Worm a Wake-Up Call: this is The Cult of Mac title for what seems the first (?) reported worm for Mac OS X.

It seems related to an iChat vulnerability, as reported even by Symantec.

Maybe it deals more with common good sense than accepting an incoming file transfer…

It’s not clear how much, but a 12% speed increase should be reached without melting your beloved Mac board.
